With the crackling of real chestnuts roasting over an open fire and the delicious smells of freshly baked shortbread and hot wassail drifting through the air, guests to the Candlelight Evening with the Macphersons were treated to a look back at what life was like during the holiday season in the mid-1800s.
Allan Macpherson House & Park opened its doors on Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m. to showcase the museum to the community as it would have been seen back then, by candlelight.
Over 50 people toured through the historic site by candlelight, sampling goodies from the kitchen and listening to beautiful live music played throughout the house.
“We’re trying to bring back the traditions,” said Karen Price, curator, about the different events offered at Macpherson Home. “I think this evening was a success.”
There were also volunteers dressed in period clothes available to answer questions, show-off old-fashioned tools and give tours of the historic museum.
Continuing in the holiday traditions, Macpherson House will next be hosting Backyard Skating at the Macpherson House on Saturday, Dec. 22 from 1-4 p.m. After the skating, there will be hot beverages and homemade treats available. Admission is $5/person and is conditional on favourable weather.
